4 Questions Every Student Should Ask After Class

As a parent, you know that what happens in the dojo doesn’t stay in the dojo — it follows your child into school, sports, and life. That’s why we want to start encouraging our students to ask themselves four simple questions after every class.

These questions don’t just help them remember what they learned. They build focus, accountability, and self-awareness — traits that carry over far beyond martial arts.

Here they are:

  1. What did you learn today in class?
This helps students reflect on something specific they gained, instead of just walking away thinking “class was fun.” The more they recall and verbalize, the deeper the lesson sticks.
  2. What did you excel at today in class?
Confidence doesn’t grow by accident. By pointing out what they did well, students learn to celebrate progress — even in small wins. This is powerful for kids who struggle with confidence.
  3. What do you need to work on more? Why and How?
This one builds honesty and ownership. Instead of waiting for an instructor or parent to point out what they need to fix, students start evaluating themselves. They also begin thinking about how to improve — that’s a leadership skill right there.
  4. What was your favorite part of class?
Kids thrive when they find joy in learning. This question helps them attach positive emotions to training, which increases motivation and consistency.

Why These Questions Work

When kids pause to reflect, they’re not just recalling moves — they’re training their brains. They learn:

  • Focus: Paying attention to what stood out in class.
  • Memory: Recalling details makes learning stick longer.
  • Self-Discipline: Owning weaknesses instead of avoiding them.
  • Resilience: Seeing challenges as things to work on, not reasons to quit.

Parents often tell me, “My child seems calmer, more confident, and more focused since starting martial arts.” These questions are one of the tools that help make that happen.

How Parents Can Use This at Home

I encourage you to ask your kids these questions after each class — maybe in the car ride home or during dinner. Keep it light and fun. Praise their answers, and especially their effort. Over time, you’ll notice their focus and self-awareness growing.

The power of martial arts isn’t just in the kicks and punches — it’s in the life lessons we carry out the door. These four questions are simple, but they give our students the tools to grow not just as martial artists, but as focused, confident people.
