As we end 2018 and begin 2019, I thought this would be a great time to talk about goal setting. No matter how old you are, you should have goals for yourself. We should always look to better ourselves in one way or another.
You may have heard of this before, but we are going to use something today to help us with our goals. We want to make sure we set S.M.A.R.T. goals. Let’s use me for an example. Amongst some other things, I want to do this year, I want to become a better martial artist. I have had a few injuries in the past few years that have set me back more than I would like. When looking at our goals, we want to follow the S.M.A.R.T formula.
S- Specific. So I can’t just say I want to be a better martial artist. I need to pick something a little more specific. So I want to kick higher.
M- Measurable. Ok, so it can’t be just “higher”. I want to more easily kick people in the head that are 6 feet tall and taller.
A- Attainable. I know I have had some injuries, but nothing has happened that would physically keep me from being able to reach this goal.
R- Realistic. So I need to be realistic. I’m not very tall, I’m 5’9”. I’m not going to kick Shaquille O’Neal in the head. So, I’m making my range from 6’ to 6’4”
T- Timely- I need to have a time that I should be able to accomplish this. For me, I will say June. That should give me enough time to stretch and get back to kicking up there where I want to be.
Sometimes we also need someone there to help us remember and refocus on our goal. Another goal of mine is to write in the school blog every Monday morning. So if you don’t see a new blog by Monday evening, be sure to ask me where it is. I’m relying on you to help me stay true on this one.
Thanks
Sensei Brian
P.S. Oh yeah, let’s not forget my first goal. All students over 6’,watch out, I’m coming for you!
